During your visit to the area, view the beautiful countryside on the Quilt Barn Tour—a driving tour that takes you through the rolling hills and past winding streams and fields of wildflowers to view quilts painted by local artists on barns throughout the region. Another popular attraction is the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway, where you can take a ride through the countryside on fully restored railway cars built in 1918, the 1920s and 1950s.
For a little cultural enrichment, head to the Dairy Barn Arts Center, an art gallery located in a dairy barn built in 1914, and featuring art from contemporary and local artists. Another cultural attraction nearby is the Nelsonville Historic Square Arts District, which offers a large Appalachian artist community, including galleries, shops, a farmer's market and cafes.
In the mood for something spooky? With a reputation for being one of the most haunted places in the country, Athens has several attractions for those who like a dash of the supernatural with their entertainment. Inside the West State Cemetery, the West State Angel is a gravestone commemorating the unidentified soldiers buried in the cemetery, and many visitors have said they saw the angel's wings flutter or have seen her shed tears.
